About this project.
A clearer way to understand published water references.
Who maintains the site?
Water Intake Calculator is an independent educational project built and maintained by Jorge Isaac Avilés Monroy, a university lecturer and researcher with a Master’s in Software Engineering, working in user experience and human–computer interaction.
That is the expertise behind this site, and it is also its limit. What we contribute is sourcing and presentation: taking published population references and stating them accurately, with their uncertainty attached. No medical or nutritional qualification is held or claimed, no clinical review is performed, and the project is not affiliated with the National Academies. The numbers come from the sources cited on the method page — not from us.

What the tool does
The calculator turns published adult beverage references into liters, US fluid ounces and familiar containers. You can also convert your own volume without entering a profile. Age determines whether the adult reference applies; your type of day changes the accompanying guidance. It does not track consumption or calculate a personal medical requirement.
How to use it
- Select your age range and the adult reference you want to explore.
- Optionally choose your type of day to see relevant guidance.
- Select a container or enter its capacity.
- Read the amount alongside the source and limits.
How we handle evidence
Our method and sources distinguish the reference used in the calculation from newer research that adds context. Study populations, uncertainty and relevant funding relationships are explained where the findings are discussed.
